Grinning
I tried to tell of what I know
laughter and visions of merriment
I wanted to show you how the sun slanted sideways
through the curtain, just so
But you turned your head into the wind
and heard me not, saw me not
I ran to the place I had been before
racing the water's edge, climbing the rocks
scittering over the mounds like a crab
finally standing upon the pinnacle stone
alone
Suddenly you were gone, head vanished in the wind
and I heard you not, saw you not
I waited upon the shore, feet trailing in the sand
kicking little waves in the founding pool
head down, hair streaming, eyes closed
listening carefully
And we were not as we had been before
we heard us not, we saw us not
So I rose and looked into the new dawn's face
sighing, and began to pick up the shells
flinging them this way, then that
Watching and listening
And I saw the sun light up the world
Colours flying into the sky, smiling
Wind's cheeks puffing clouds along
Cheerfully
And the laughter came bubbling up
tripping over my lips, skipping down my chin
dribbling off my fingertips and onto the sand
I turned toward our house, packed my bags
and left the keys where you could find them
Opened the door, stepped out into the day
and walked on into my future, grinning
